A magnetic field is is a vector field, with the vector at each point crossed with the velocity times the charge of the moving particle equal to the force on the particle (see Lorentz force). Magnetic fields can be generated either by electric currents (see Biot–Savart law) or changing electric fields (see Maxwell's equations).
